A Service of Thanksgiving for the Life and Work of Sir Kenneth MacMillan was held at Westminster Abbey, London on 17 Feb 1993. The files in this series comprise:

Following Kenneth MacMillan's involvement in the Herbert Ross film of Nijinsky, Kenneth MacMillan conceived the idea of a television ballet-drama about Nijinsky's life. He initially discussed the project with London Weekend Television and then with Granada. The material in this file contains correspondence with both organisations and comprises

1. Two typed letters from Melvyn Bragg to Kenneth MacMillan on The South-Bank Show, London Weekend Television letter headed paper, discussing the idea of a collaboration on a Nijinsky work and expressing Melvyn Bragg's delight at the possibility of working with Kenneth MacMillan, one with envelope, 24 Oct 1978 and 15 Nov 1978
2. One typed letter from Nick Elliott to Kenneth MacMillan on London Weekend Television letter headed paper, attaching a photocopy of a two page memo from Nick Elliott to Michael Grade, attempting to move the project forward, 5 Jan 1979. In 1992 Kenneth MacMillan was in discussion with Jane P. Hermann about staging [Romeo and Juliet at the Arena di Verona]. The discussions continued with Deborah MacMillan, following Kenneth MacMillan's death in November 1992. There are three typed faxes from Jane P. Hermann, one handwritten reply from Kenneth MacMillan and three handwritten replies from Deborah MacMillan, 21 Oct 1992 - 5 Jan 1993 and n.d.

The majority of material in this file consists of correspondence relating to Kenneth MacMillan granting the rights to The Australian Ballet to perform his ballet Manon, with many faxes between Kenneth and Deborah MacMillan, Simon Williams at Williams and Niblett Intellectual Property solicitors in Sydney, Australia, The Australian Ballet and Rubinstein Callingham, Polden and Gale, solicitors in London, UK. There are two letters from Maina Gielgud, Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet, initiating the discussion. Some of the faxes are annotated in hand by Kenneth and Deborah MacMillan and many of their replies consist of handwritten faxes. There is also a small amount of correspondence relating to the retirement of Noel Pelly as Administrator at The Australian Ballet, with handwritten tributes from Kenneth and Deborah MacMillan

Correspondence with the BBC discussing arrangements for filming and broadcasting some of Kenneth MacMillan's ballets, including Romeo and Juliet, Manon, Playground, Isadora, Elite Syncopations, Side Show and Winter Dreams pas de deux, the latter for the Queen Mother's 90th birthday tribute. There is correspondence discussing Kenneth MacMillan's possible involvement in two of a proposed series of four dance Workshops, the possibility of Kenneth MacMillan working on a television play for the BBC, and a fax from Dory Previn asking if there is any news on the BBC production, 13 May 1982 Music and Arts New Season 1984-85 colour brochure with details of Dancer four films celebrating the role of the male ballet dancer, presented by Peter Schaufuss, with photos of Schaufuss

Correspondence relating to contracts for Cincinnati Ballet to perform Kenneth MacMillan's ballet Concerto with copies of a draft contract and contracts to be signed. There is a letter from Ivan Nagy, Artistic Director of the Cincinnati Ballet, enclosing two press reviews for Concerto and a handwritten letter from Kenneth MacMillan to Ivan Nagy about the possibility of the Company performing Elite Syncopations, and a booking leaflet for the 1988-1989 season including the first performance of Concerto.

The correspondence in this file is between Kenneth MacMillan and Igor Kosak, Ballet Director of the ballet company at the Theater und Philharmonie in Essen, trying to organise an evening of MacMillan ballets. There is mention of Faith Worth being available to stage a MacMillan work but the size of the company and the timings do not allow for MacMillan's works to be performed by the company
