Historia biográfica

Kenneth MacMillan was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, and began ballet classes in Retford, England, in 1940. He joined the Sadler's Wells Ballet School in 1944 and later the Sadler's Wells Ballet but gave up dancing for choreography partly due to crippling stage fright. His first choreographic work was Somnambulism, created for the Sadler's Wells Ballet Choreographic Group in 1953 and he created works for both Royal Ballet companies throughout his career. He created significant works for The Stuttgart Ballet and his works are danced by ballet companies world-wide. He has also created work for television and cinema.
Kenneth MacMillan was Director of the Deutsche Oper Ballet in Berlin from 1966 to 1969, Artistic Director of The Royal Ballet from 1970 to 1977 and its Principal Chroreographer from 1977 until his death. He was also Associate Director of American Ballet Theatre from 1984 to 1989, and Artistic Associate of the Houston Ballet from 1989 to 1992.
Kenneth MacMillan was knighted in 1983, and he received honorary degrees from the University of Edinburgh (1976) and the Royal College of Art (1992). His awards include the Evening Standard Ballet Award (1979); Society of West End Theatre Ballet Award, 1980 and 1983; and, posthumously, the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production in 1993 for The Judas Tree; the Society of London Theatre Special Award in 1993; and the Tony Award for Best Choreography in 1994 for Carousel

Kenneth MacMillan created the one-act ballet of Anastasia for the Deutsche Opera which premiered on 25.6.1967 in Berlin. This became Act III in the three-act version that he created for The Royal Ballet, which premiered at the Royal Opera House, London, on 22.7.1971. This file includes an incomplete version of the Benesh Movement Notation score written by Monica Parker. Material comprises

  1. Two page typed cast list for the 1972/73 season, London, with amendments by Kenneth MacMillan in black felt tip pen
  2. Carbon copy of two paged typed cast list for performances in New York, 1972
  3. Two page typed cast list for the 1974/5 season, London
  4. Two pages of score with the cast list (with understudies) in pencil, with some additions in black ink, dated Sept 1971
  5. Cover page Anastasia Act I listing the characters for the 3 movements plus 13 pages of score in pencil, pages numbered both sides 1 - 26 in red biro
  6. Cover page Anastasia Act I listing dancers and the dances plus 24 pages of score in pencil, pages numbered both sides 1 - 48 in red biro
  7. Untitled cover page plus 16 pages of score in pencil with 1st Act -Last Mvt at top of first page, pages numbered 1-37 in red biro
  8. Blue folded card containing one page of rehearsal calls folded in half, with initials and numbers on reverse in black ink with Deutsche Oper's in pencil at top of page; five lined pages with numbers in margins and brief descriptions on each page, in black biro. The first page is titled Anastasia - 3rd Act 1st Movement, page 4 is titled 2nd Movement, page 8 is titled 3rd Movement, page 10 ends with Fin. One page of blue card with pencil notes on the front for Act III (tbc), seven pages title 1st Movement, two empty pages, seven further pages, one last page with 1st Movement Anastasia at top, 2nd Mvt and 3rd in margin, all in pencil
