Douglas Steuart joined the Sadler's Wells Ballet in 1942 as a dancer. He was conscripted into the RAF from November 1945 until June 1948, returning to Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet in time for the Company's first tour to North America in 1949. He retired from dancing in 1973 in order to take a course in choreology, rejoining The Royal Ballet in 1976 as a choreologist. He retired in August 1990.
