In 1978 MacMillan's Mayerling directed by Derek Bailey was nominated for, and won, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award for Best Television Documentary. The Ankara State Ballet of Turkey contacted Kenneth MacMillan, via the British Council, to ask to stage The Invitation in their 1985-1986 season, and in 1992 to stage Mayerling.
