Kenneth MacMillan joined the Sadler's Wells Ballet School in 1945 and the Sadler's Wells Ballet in 1946. He created his first choreography for the Sadler's Wells Choreographic Group in 1953.

Following his retirement as Artistic Director of The Royal Ballet, Kenneth MacMillan was appointed Principal Choreographer. He continued to create new ballets for the Company as well as being responsible for supervising the revivals of existing works.
