Kenneth MacMillan received a knighthood for Services to British ballet in the Birthday Honours list of June 1983. His investiture by HM Queen Elizabeth II took place on 20 Oct 1983. The photographs include three colour photographs of Kenneth, Deborah and Charlotte MacMillan at Buckingham Palace, two colour photographs at their home in London, and 43 black and white photographs at Buckingham Palace

The black and white prints are from Edinburgh, and the colour prints show Kenneth MacMillan with Dame Vivienne Westwood and David Hockney, who received their Doctorates from the Royal College of Art on the same day, plus one portrait of Kenneth MacMillan in his robes
