Kenneth MacMillan was invited to present an evening of one act ballets by the Paris Opera Ballet in 1978. This file contains 12 pages of Kenneth MacMillan's handwritten notes about each ballet with four photocopies of typed descriptions of the ballets written by Kenneth MacMillan

Kenneth MacMillan created the one-act ballet of Anastasia for the Deutsche Opera which premiered on 25.6.1967 in Berlin. This became Act III in the three-act version that he created for The Royal Ballet, which premiered at the Royal Opera House, London, on 22.7.1971. This file includes an incomplete version of the Benesh Movement Notation score written by Monica Parker. Material comprises

1. Two page typed cast list for the 1972/73 season, London, with amendments by Kenneth MacMillan in black felt tip pen
2. Carbon copy of two paged typed cast list for performances in New York, 1972

Kenneth MacMillan created a three-act version of Anastasia for The Royal Ballet which premiered on 22 Jul 1971 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. The material comprises:

1. A copy of French's Acting Edition No.967, The Recognition Scene from Anastasia by Marcelle Maurette, English Adaptation by Guy Bolton
2. A typed letter from John E. Manahan to Vernon Clarke, Manager of The Royal Ballet, 1 Jul 1971. The letter states that his wife, Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia, joins him in granting free and unrestricted use of her name to The Royal Ballet for the forthcoming production of Anastasia. On letter head of The Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia, USA
3. Telegram to Kenneth MacMillan from Ursula Moreton, with love and best wishes for the first night, 22 Jul 1971
4. Telegram to Kenneth MacMillan from Ninette de Valois, 'Dear Kenneth you know how much I would have a great ballet meet with recognition and success for its Choreographer My Love Madam', 22 Jul 1971

The Ankara State Ballet of Turkey contacted Kenneth MacMillan, via the British Council, to ask to stage The Invitation in their 1985-1986 season, and in 1992 to stage Mayerling. Kenneth MacMillan was invited to be a member of the jury for the Annual Examination of dancers at the Paris Opera Ballet in 1977. The material in this file includes the invitation, instructions and list of the jury, a printed folder with an history and introduction to the Annual Examination with the names of dancers and roles for 1977, and seven typed forms with Kenneth MacMillan's handwritten comments. Anya Sainsbury was a dancer with The Royal Ballet, as Anya Linden, and created roles in several of Kenneth MacMillan's early ballets. She married John Sainsbury and they were great supporters of The Royal Ballet and the Royal Opera House as well as friends of Kenneth and Deborah MacMillan. The material in this file comprises

1. One page handwritten note from John Sainsbury to Kenneth and Debbie thanking them for their birthday wishes, dated Nov 8th, no year
2. One page letter handwritten on both sides, from Anya to Kenneth, c/o the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, forwarding Kate (Firestone's) contact details in California where Anya is staying, and sending best wishes for the forthcoming performances of Isadora in New York, undated but envelope postmarked June 1981
3. One page letter handwritten on both sides, from Anya to Kenneth congratulating him on the revival of Rite of Spring, with envelope, 26.10.1987
4. One page handwritten letter from John to Kenneth, sending congratulations for the performance of Rite of Spring, with envelope, 27.10.(1987)
5. Handwritten note to Kenneth from John and Anya (written by John) praising the performance 'of a true work of genius', undated by accompanied by a typed compliments slip dated 13.10.1989. The note refers to the performance of Requiem on 12.10.1989
6. Handwritten pencil draft of a thank you letter to John and Anya for the holiday on Crete that Kenneth, Deborah and Charlotte spent with the Sainsburys in 1991. Unrelated notes on the reverse in blue biro

In 1992 Kenneth MacMillan was in discussion with Jane P. Hermann about staging [Romeo and Juliet at the Arena di Verona]. The discussions continued with Deborah MacMillan, following Kenneth MacMillan's death in November 1992. There are three typed faxes from Jane P.
