      History

Camargo made her debut with the Paris Opera Ballet in 1726 at the age of 16. She challenged the dominance of male dancers in the art form by performing ballet vocabulary that were deemed only suitable for men, with effortless quality. She is often known to be the first woman to perform an entrechat quatre as well as to popularise shortened skirts and flat slippers. She retired in 1751.
